The Peters & May group of companies, renowned as leaders in global specialist niche freight forwarding and marine logistic provision, have secured a major new contract with hovercraft manufacturer, Griffon Hoverwork of Hythe, Southampton, UK. All sister companies under the Peters & May group umbrella will be involved in fulfilling Griffon Hoverwork’s requirements.
The contract followed a complex competitive tender for the management of all Griffon Hoverwork’s national and international transport requirements. The work ranges from documentation preparation, to the secure packaging and onward transportation of spares through to the lifting, shipping and discharge of the finished 21 metre hovercrafts to overseas destinations.
Charlie Milligan, Shipping Manager at Peters & May for seven years, outlines why he feels Peters & May was selected against nine competitive companies.
‘Peters & May was awarded the contract on a combination of many factors, not least of which is our ability to securely and efficiently transport vessels to any part of the world using the Peters & May global network of owned offices and exclusive agencies throughout the shipment process. Wherever required, our own Load Masters will be available to oversee shipments at both departure and destination ports.’
Peters & May is acknowledged within the leisure and commercial marine business sectors as an established professional provider of global logistics for marine vessels and equipment, and this contract covers every element of the company’s services. This includes services from sister company, Peters & May Global Logistics, which handles freight forwarding for project cargo such as cars, trucks and oversized vehicles, factory machinery, pipelines, generators and wind turbines. Peters & May Global Logistics achieved the initial tender and will be handling all complex documentation and regulatory requirements necessary to transport hovercraft and equipment around the world. Courier services are being provided by sister company, Corporate Express Couriers (CEC).
Head of Procurement Andrew Hireson from Griffon Hoverwork comments, ‘Our requirements would prove to be challenging for the ultimately successful supplier as we were seeking a total management solution from a single provider. Throughout the process we were impressed with the service levels of the Peters & May group, their experience, flexibility and understanding of our business needs and their ability to simply take over the management of our logistics.’
Charlie Milligan added, ‘The finer details were negotiated over several face-to-face meetings and the resultant service we are offering is a total one-stop shop for the management of all Griffon Hoverwork’s national and international transport requirements.’
Peters & May is working with Griffon Hoverwork to add value to their business offering to facilitate even quicker and more efficient national and global transportation solutions. To further enhance this, practical, real-time on-line reporting and tracking solutions and integrated systems between the two companies are being installed.
The first major shipment was in September 2009 where six 380TDs were air freighted to Abu Dhabi under very tight deadlines. This month, a 21metre Griffon 8100TD hovercraft despatched to Kuwait for the Kuwait Coast Guard. Most recently, on Friday 16th July 2010, Peters & May delivered an 8000TD to Singapore for crash rescue duties in the shallow waters of the Johore Straites and the Straits of Singapore, and coincidentally is the second Griffon hovercraft at this location.
